This Year In Popular Gifts - 1987 - …… Nothing?
After all the runaway successes of 1980 toys, 1987 was seemingly uneventful. No fighting in the malls over toys, no upset children because what they wanted was sold out. That is not to say there were not popular items, it is just that there was no must have item.

The Pogo Ball was hitting it's popularity around this time. For the uninitiated, the Pogo Ball was a rubber "ball" that had a figure 8 shape that was attached to a strong plastic platform. To use the Pogo Ball, you would stand on the platform while balancing on the ball. You could then hop around on the ball using a jumping motion. It was all a lot of fun until you lost your balance and hit the pavement!

Alf was another hit. From the T.V. series featuring the cat eating alien came to store shelves. Alf had a built in cassette player inside and would play a cassette tape that shipped with it. Alf would play the cassette and his mouth and ears would move. Very similar to the Teddy Ruxpin doll although it was made by Coleco and not Worlds of Wonder.

Christmas of 1987 was also popular for Pound Puppies. These stuffed dogs followed in the Cabbage Patch ideals of being able to adopt a toy. They were even packaged to look like they were in a kennel. Once a child got it home they could read the care sheet that accompanied the pup on how to take care of an animal. You could also send away for a personalized dog tag that featured the animal's name as well as the child's name as well as an official ownership certificate.
