The Cabbage Patch Kids were insanely popular and topped children's wish lists like no other toy. These strangely proportioned dolls, complete with their own adoption certificate, had some magic to them and they flew off the shelves. First year sales were a record breaking 2.5 million units!

The huge demand lead to parents panicking that they would not be able to get their kid the most desirable gifts of the season. Violent incidents were reported of people trying to get their hands on the dolls. One woman had a leg broken in a throng of people getting their hands on the dolls. The Victoria Advocate in Texas had a great write-up in their newspaper about the near riots to get the toy.

The Cabbage Patch Kids had great success for years to come. In 1984 the Cabbage Patch Kids line of products came close to the $2 billion dollar sales figure. Their record (yes, the Cabbage Patch Kids record) went Platinum and a video game was created. The Kids were the official mascot of the 1992 US Olympic team. Even U.S. Presidents have been presented with a likeness in Cabbage Patch Kids form.

The dolls are still being produced. They have a line of newborns with the Drink N' Wet Newborn that you need to change it's diaper after you feed it. A line called Cuties in which the dolls are wearing very cute outfits (like this Cow. They also have an interactive line called Baby So Real that comes with LCD eyes that animate to look around, as well you can interact with the toy by feeding, burping, diaper changes, tickling, peak a boo, as well as via a Bluetooth connection and accompanying app.
